This documentary offers a unique insight into the world of studio-based design education through the eyes of a group of students who have completed their final design projects. The documentary is detailed around 6 titles;
First of all, we are asking ourselves what is architecture and what separates us from the builder and one of the students is saying that is really impressing; ” It’s about understanding human behavior. Being a designer of human want. The architecture is what you are experiencing in your daily life. On the street, the space of the street, how you navigate the street, how you relate to the buildings around you.”
Then, we are looking for an answer to the question of what is the concept and culture of architecture in architecture. One of the teacher in the document explains it as follows; ”A design studio is a place where individual action and individual creativity is measured very directly by the people around them.” As I watched this part, I realized that the studio culture is exactly the same wherever we are in the world.
Next, we are discussing the concept of ” critique ” which we are already familiar with. And we realize that we have misinterpretations about what is a good critique. One of the students said that; When you go into a critique, if hot air is dominant and the project is told how good it is and nothing is being discussed, it is a bad critique. If you influence the person in front of you with your idea and design, they start to think and criticize. The fact that he criticizes you stems from the fact that he sees a lot of hope in your project.
I also corrected the misunderstanding about that in my mind thanks to this documentary.
In the final part, we talk about the question of how to become a good architect and the instructors give some advice to the next generation. As I learned, the most important thing about being an architect is learning how to think clearly.
Last of all, they say to us; ”This current generation of beginning students of architecture must have the capacity to reshape the world like we have never seen before and they need to access to as much technology and as much meaningful discourse surrounding these techniques and these tools. So that, they are fully prepared to go out into the world in the future to do something positive and productive.”
